Otto Dix strove to capture the essence of a person. For example, the green, black, and brown in this work--the colors of money--reflect the sitter's profession. "He had such a clinical, nearly satirist viewpoint," says curator Sabine Rewald. Compare Dix's portrait of Max Roesberg, painted in 1922, to two photographs of Roesberg taken in the early 1920s and 1950.
